  • Kenpo Karate NZ

Replacing HTML with PHP and css The graphic design of this karate club website was quite attractive. The technology however was basic: table-driven with all HTML, and some css. Being HTML, any changes in general layout, such as amends to the menu, had to be done on every page. Tiresome. What a shame that the HTML4 spec doesn't allow for an "Include" statement. So my first campaign involved the gradual adoption of PHP, so that parts of the layout could be derived from a set of common functions....

... summaries floating above the clicked item. But instead we settled on getting our own JavaScript to show the summary in a sidebar, where we had a bit more control on the layout. We added logos in the sidebar for the free telly guide and the channel. HTML and css Validation As always, I chiselled away to get as near-perfect HTML validation status as was possible. I just love that Green Tick when Firefox and HTML Validator pronounce that all is well with your HTML and css. Using our own PHP rather...

  • E-commerce Web-Site Topologika

... PayPal have not fixed them. However, these were not at all fatal: in the Sandbox for instance, no automatic email is issued to the Merchant by PayPal, even though it is when you run live, and even though an email is issued to the Sandbox buyer. HTML and css W3C Validation I had an 18-month campaign gradually to remove the illegal HTML and achieved complete W3C compliance in almost all cases. Along the way, I replaced the old JavaScript which drove the unusual pop-up menu along the bottom, and a...

  • PHP String Replace

I used a css class called “spotlight”, and wanted the match to be case-insensitive. So the following worked tolerably: $title_formatted = eregi_replace($query, "<span class=\"spotlight\">$query</span>", $title); However, the results were slightly marred by the fact that the target text (which got put back in the string between the tags), inherited the case of the query string. If someone queried for “west” then the resultant title became:Web development in the South <span c...

  • OpenCart, Thickbox image not displaying in IE

I was using the JQuery v 1.3.2 which was bundled with OpenCart. The web has a few mentions of this problem, but they recommended tiny changes to the css and/or Js. I happily tried those but they didn't fix the problem.I noticed that the demos on the Thickbox web site worked for me, so I used their copy of JQuery which was a recent one. However.... (bah) then the tab display failed. The default tab (for the "Description") remained invisible until clicked. Very boring. So, on a hunch, I re...

... as always the body text came in sundry waves and variations. Kate wanted a dropdow/flyout menu. I have a slight aversion to Javascript implementations of those, partly based on the old-fashioned idea that some people might have JavaScript turned off. css implementaions are quite possible and I think more reliable. We used the excellent ADXmenu and applied a two-level system, with the size tuned to exactly suit the height of the large Flash animation at top. More recently, Kate derived some exce...

  • OpenCart Upgrade - Cruising Electronics

... payment tests you do with a testing sandbox, nothing beats the final proper test with Live transactions. I always create a a ZZZTest product which is 10cents or so, and buy that. If that works, it will work for any amount. There were some later tweaks for css and handling tax. Tax always puzzles me in OpenCart... which I must admit is a poor reflection on me, not on OpenCart.

  • Mobile-friendly Website Conversion

... 320pixels (at the minimum) or conditionally allow them at a couple of higher levels dependent on the device. Often you have to hide the classic wide banner picture, replace with a smaller one. And if you have several panels normally side by side, use css to ensure that they move down to the left and arrange themselves top-bottom on a narrow screen. There are very many helpful pages of device sizes, of which I found this one to be the simplest.  Make sure your menu navigation is easy to find;...

  • Wordpress site for Massage and Reflexology

... was easy to change our ideas as we evolved the site - we often changed menus and sub-menus, and re-organised pages. We made a lot of fine-tuning of individual page layouts, to get a very exact arrangement of text and images. As usual, this was a mix of css and inline style attributes where necessary. Although WordPress grew its reputation as a blogger's site, a blog is not a necessary feature. We built all the required pages as "Pages", meaning that they have no time-related element. Whereas "P...

  • Online Training System in PHP

... abstraction layers were in use, which was redundant.  And the database account username and password was specified identically in seven different files, making it an irritation to move the software to any other host.  There were many missed opportunities for css styles, so that some pages showed in Times font, others in Arial or Verdana. Identical code fragments were moved into one re-useable function, for example, to achieve a common presentation of page header I addressed these and many oth...

  • Pharma Health NZ Web Site

Kennedy Garland, who runs Pharma Health, (Auckland NZ) already had some idea of key ingredients to use in the graphic design of the web site, such as a red-cross motif. He also wanted to use cool blues and greens, suiting the tone of a healing and natural business. The site uses bespoke PHP, all pages going through a common layout function something like a small-scale CMS, to preserve consistency. The focus of the web site was always going to be the products themselves. Hence, the main page is d...

  • Incentive Solutions PHP

This was a varied role over 18 months, both front-end and back-end, all manner of PHP, MS-SQL and JavaScript. ISL has a comprehensive and sophisticated system helping to manage all aspects of the business, and I was helping the tech manager (David Higgs) on maintenance and improvements. Coping with tens of thousands of members requires a large range of features, and the main software architect (Hi Lance!) had done an extraordinary job covering so much territory.  Among the tasks were: Creation...

  • Time For You Treatments

Starting from scratch, the structure of the site fell together very naturally: a home page, contacts page, then one page each devoted to the services Susan offers. We chose pinks, browns and pastel yellows, with some low-contrast marble and towelling textures as a backdrop to menu, footer and page surrounds, to give connotations of spas and saunas. We had several suitable images for the front page and could not choose which one to use. So a very small bit of Javascript refreshes the image on th...

  • Elizabeth Mapstone

We both met while reading Experimental Psychology at Oxford in 1981-1984. Way back when still learning web sites, I built her a site which now looks very naive. The new one is a tad batter and displays a few examples of her many talents, which truly comprises the tip of the iceberg. Elizabeth is the author of "War of Words: Women and Men Arguing" and "Stop Dreaming, Start Living" www.elizabethmapstone.co.uk In the new design I wanted to apply a tabbed appearance (getting away from the old depr...

  • North Shore Yogalates

The site needed to be "smooth", mellow, with natural textures and symbols, to reflect the style of the teacher. "Dru" yoga is a style which emphasises calmness and avoids the more strenuous exercises of some other schools. It was also useful to publicise the class dates and locations in North Shore, Auckland, NZ. The teacher was starting from scratch and so publicity and visibility was essential. We were fortunate to secure the ideal domain name which has exactly the words required to convey th...

  • Owen Arts SEO

Owen had arranged a nice design, with three key pages for his main activities: illustration, storyboards and visuals. Each page had 16 thumbnails, and clicking on these opened a full page in a new browser with a good-sized image and no text to clutter matters. Unfortunately the site was almost unfindable on any major search engine, well down the page listings if it appeared at all. Owen had resorted to paying other directories for some listings and second-order visibility. This worked by getting...

  • Markland Clinic

For the latest incarnation of this UK Physiotherapy site in 2010, I created a smooth-scrolling Flash animation for a band of pictures along the top. In 2008, a new branding had been created by designer Ray Lipscombe, so I had a straightforward time implementing it. Ray's design for the sister site, Sports Perform, provided me my first opportunity to create a Flash presentation. It was as simple as they come, a sequence of photos of athletes fading into each other. I used the excellent and eve...

  • IPSV Module for Joomla

What is IPSV? The IPSV (Integrated Public Sector Vocabulary) is a controlled vocabulary of approximately 7,000 terms, categorised in a hierarchy sometimes up to 7 or 8 levels deep. The IPSV serves as an encoding scheme for use with the Subject element of the e-GMS (e-Government Metadata Standard). By agreeing a consistent set of descriptive terms, search agents are more likely to find successful matches: for example, "Heritage" is a term to be used instead of near-synonyms such as "Conservation"...

  • Seismics.net Google SEO

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Cosmetically, the site was pretty well suited for the market - no-frills. And it was already well-ranked on Google for some terms, but they were not all the terms which were required. It didn't take long for me to rummage "under the hood" to spot the usual culprits: poor page titles, no headings summaries at all, and, of less value, lack of META descriptions. Following up the rear was a sprinkle of small-beer items : a few TITLEs missing for images and better an...
